Acid Reflux Diet Plans and Recipes
Life seems so good after a heavy dinner of hamburger, French fries and your favorite soda drink. As you lie down on your favorite seat and attempt to watch the latest news on TV, you suddenly feel a burning discomfort on your chest. You begin to panic as the discomfort climbs towards your shoulders and you feel bile coming from your throat. The next thing you know, you’re in the doctor’s office, going through a variety of tests. After the results arrived, you found out you’re suffering from acid reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). With this diagnosis comes a variety of interventions and treatments, which aims to help you live life to the fullest, despite your disease. One of these treatment methods includes your acid reflux diet.
The sole purpose of having the GERD diet is to help reduce the signs and symptoms that are usually manifested in those suffering from the disease. This diet is commonly recommended to people with GERD and the complications that come with it, those with esophagitis, those with esophageal ulcers and for people who have been experiencing recurrent heartburns. These dietary plans are not the sole intervention designed to decrease the GERD symptoms. Lifestyle modifications and pharmacological therapy are also prescribed for people suffering from GERD. It is important to contact your physician for any questions that you may have or discuss the dietary and lifestyle modifications that is best suited for your needs.
Foods to Avoid
Reduction in your fat intake is necessary in an acid reflux diet. This is mainly because high fat meals and deep fried meals can diminish the pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter, impeding the stomach from emptying. This can result to an increased risk of reflux. The same goes for your total caloric intake, especially if you’re obese. Obesity encourages reflux because of the pressure of the body weight on your intestines whenever you lie down. Large meals are also prohibited as it only increases the pressure in the stomach and the risk for reflux.
Due to the presence of methylxanthine, which has been proven to diminish the lower esophageal sphincter pressure, chocolate is also avoided for individuals suffering from GERD. Coffee, whether it has a significant amount of caffeine or not, also needs to be avoided as it also encourages a reflux. However, it depends on the individual. If the patient can tolerate coffee without reflux then he/she can drink it in moderation. Other irritants such as citrus juices, tomato products, alcohol, mint and carbonated beverages, which are known to exacerbate gastroesophageal reflux, should be avoided as well.
A sample menu for people with GERD is one below:
½ cup of Apple juice
¾ cup of whole-grain cereal
½ of a banana
2 slices of whole wheat toast
1 teaspoon of margarine
2 tablespoons of jelly or jam
1 cup of skimmed milk
Aside from maintaining the acid reflux diet, you should also avoid eating within 3 hours before bedtime, you should stop smoking and chew only mint-free gum to help promote saliva production and diminish the acid in your esophagus. Avoid wearing clothes that are tight in the abdominal area and eat smaller meals as well.
