Calcaneal Spurs – Causes, Symptoms and Remedies
Calcaneal spurs is the growth of bone in the heel that can trigger mild to severe pain on the rear part of the foot. A lot of people believe that this condition is just the same with plantar fasciitis. Although calcaneal spurs and plantar fasciitis both cause heel pain most especially when walking or standing, they are completely different from one another. As mentioned earlier, calcaneal spurs is due to bone growth on the heel region while on the other hand, plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia which is a kind of tissue located in the heel region.
There are several possible causes of calcaneal spurs. In fact, plantar fasciitis can also cause this condition due to the heel’s inflammation and irritation. Secondly, calcaneal spurs can also develop if the person executes repeated physical activities that require foot movements such as jogging and running. Other causes may include not standing straight which can give uneven weight to the lower extremities, those having tight calf muscles which is stressful to the foot and being overweight or obese. Even though this condition can develop to anyone, it has been observed to be common among middle-aged individuals.
Perhaps the most conspicuous symptom of calcaneal spurs is experiencing pain on the heel part. Sufferers can either feel a dull aching pain or something that is really excruciating. Aside from experiencing the pain when running, jogging or walking, it can also be felt when getting up from the bed. Severe pain is felt when a person carries weighty objects as well.
When the foot has been stretched abruptly, pain can also be felt but from a different cause. Bone pain is not the cause of sudden stretching but it is the stretching of the tissues because of the bone growth. This means that bone protrusion in the heel region has already taken place.
Bone protrusion can be diagnosed easily if the person undergoes the x-ray procedure. When confirmed, physicians will be prescribing anti-inflammatory medications as well as pain relievers to alleviate the pain triggered by the condition. Furthermore, home remedies are also available in eliminating the pain sensation.
It is always recommended to have sufficient rest when experiencing plantar fasciitis as well as calcaneal spurs. Secondly, the use of cold application can also help relieve the heel pain. Furthermore, one should also avoid from jogging, running or other physical exercises that give stress to the heels. Some doctors even suggest the use of night splints and shoe inserts in order to stretch the heels. Finally, alleviating the pain in the heel can be attained by having a massage and doing light leg exercises.
