Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition where your median nerve gets affected when too much pressure is exerted on the wrist. If the symptoms of the syndrome are not cared for immediately it will lead to the need for Carpal tunnel syndrome surgery. There are several ways to prevent this condition and even ways to treat it in the initial stages; however if the condition is not taken care of it can lead to severe damage to the wrist and surgery will be the only cure to avoid permanent damage to the area.

The carpal tunnel syndrome surgery is very common in the United States; as a matter of fact it is one of the most common surgeries to be performed in this country. The symptoms of the condition last for a few months; however if they are not cared for immediately then you may need surgical procedures to help you out.

Carpal tunnel syndrome surgery requires overnight hospitalization as well as a lot of medication. Unfortunately many patients require surgery on both wrists. In order to prevent hampering your regular activities you need to avoid both surgeries at the same time.

Open release surgery is a corrective surgical procedure. In this procedure the wrist is cut open by 2 inches and the carpal tunnel is enlarged so that the nerves have a larger space for he nerves. A local anesthetic is sufficient to conduct this procedure.

An endoscopic surgery allows a person to get the benefits of the surgery while also reducing the discomfort after the surgery. This procedure is conducted under a local anesthetic and it has minimal scarring.

Though the surgeries are effective in reducing the symptoms of the syndrome it may take a few months to heal completely. Some cases have been reported of the person loosing strength in the wrist and even feeling of numbness in the region. Those who undergo the surgery are also prone to stiffness in the wrist, nerve damage or even extreme tenderness.

Post surgery it is important for patients to undergo physical therapy to regain the strength in the wrist and to be able to resume with daily activities quickly. In rare cases the person may have to change their industry or job as their jobs may be detrimental to their wrists.

The average costs of the surgery, rehabilitation and medication post the surgery range between $5000 and $10000. Some of the side effects of the surgery include permanent loss of strength in the wrist, inability to lift weights, slight numbness in the forearm and tissue damage. It is not uncommon for people to suffer from pain even after the surgery. In some cases the person may require multiple surgeries on order to get permanent relief from this condition. Due to the high risks involved in this surgery, doctors and surgeons try their best to cure the condition with anti biotic medication and even physiotherapy in order to prevent surgery.
