The carpal tunnel syndrome is essentially related to our wrist which subsequently leads to numbness in our thumbs and fingers. The wrist joint is one of the most vital and delicate joints of the body, and is protected by a fibrous tissue band which supports it. There’s this thin space that exists between the wrist bone and the tissue band, and is referred to as the carpal tunnel. There is a nerve called the median nerve which passes through this tunnel and receives sensations from the fingers of the hand. If the tissue band swells or dislocates, causing the nerve to squeeze, it is not able to receive those signals, resulting in numbness and tickling sensation in fingers. This is the carpal tunnel syndrome. Medical science has come up with several carpal tunnel syndrome treatments that offer sufficient relief.

In order to understand the treatments, we need to have complete awareness of the health conditions that might cause this disease and activities which might cause aggravation. Pregnancy, hypothyroidism, obesity, arthritis and diabetes are a few common ailments which might eventually lead to this syndrome. Stress and trauma also play a vital role. There are certain uncommon diseases too, which cause abnormal depositions in the carpal tunnel, subsequently irritating the median nerve. Some of these are leukaemia, sarcoidosis, multiple myeloma etc. However, these are very uncommon occurrences.

To deal with the carpel tunnel syndrome treatments, you need to know which activities are liable to cause the disease to worsen. You need to keep away from work that causes the inflammation of tendons, like continuous and uninterrupted typing etc. This could worsen your condition. Once you are aware of these dos and don’ts, you can at least prevent the disease from worsening. In order to treat this successfully, the initial treatments need to be significantly conservative. Aggressive treatments need to gradually follow, should the symptoms persist. The body needs time to react to the treatments being given; therefore the degree of treatment needs to progress gradually.

The preliminary treatments could include some anti-inflammatory drugs, which reduce the inflammation of the tissues resulting in lesser numbness. The next step would be to opt for wrist braces. These braces expand the carpal tunnel and reduce the irritation on the nerves. These braces are best worn during the night when the wrist receives complete rest. Also you need to wear it while doing activities which might tend to cause swelling of the tissue band. There are some carpal solutions also available, which promise to perform similar functions. If these carpal tunnel syndrome treatments don’t seem to work, you will have to go for a cortisone injection.

Cortisone injections offer effective treatments to most patients suffering from this syndrome. Firstly, the medicine is administered directly at the carpal tunnel and secondly it works wonders in reducing the inflammation around the area. Though the relief is known to be temporary, the effects might last for about a year. If it still doesn’t settle down, then probably you are affected with a severe form of this syndrome which requires a surgery for cure.
