The major source of cardiovascular mortality is hypertension as stated by the World Health Organization. Hypertension has been extensively affecting lots of individuals every year and most of them die because of the development of complications. Hypertension is a lifelong medical condition. It can be primary which is a hypertension that is present in almost of all cases and where no other medical condition is involved or a secondary hypertension which is an aftereffect of other medical condition that the patient is experiencing like problems in the kidneys, arteries, heart and endocrine system. All patients diagnosed with hypertension are advised to remain on medication regimen. Below are several high blood pressure medication options.

With the advent of advanced researches, there are now many kinds of anti-hypertensive drugs available in the market today. First and foremost, before buying anti-hypertensive medications, you must consult with a medical doctor so that they will prescribe the appropriate anti-hypertensive drug you should take. One particular anti-hypertensive drug that is commonly prescribed is the ACE inhibitor. ACE inhibitor meds lower down blood pressure through the inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme to change angiotensin I to angiotensin II. This type of anti-hypertensive medications is generally prescribed to primary hypertension cases and is commonly contraindicated to persons with renal problems and hypersensitivity to such medication.

Another type of high blood pressure medication is the Beta Blockers. This medication lowers the blood pressure by blocking the beta receptor sites in the body which will hinder the action of adrenaline therefore relaxing the blood vessels and reducing cardiac workload. The third most commonly prescribed anti-hypertensive drug is the calcium channel blockers which acts by blocking calcium channel sites in the heart to lower the cardiac workload and promote dilation of the blood vessels. There are other types of anti-hypertensive medication available such as direct rennin inhibitors, alpha blockers, angiotension II receptor agonist and diuretics.

Even though these medications are great in decreasing the blood pressure and relieving high blood pressure symptoms, augmenting medication regimen with lifestyle change, diet and exercise will optimize the effects of the treatment.
