Control Your Environment for Weight Loss Success
When you ask a fitness trainer what the single most beneficial thing you can do to support your weight loss goals, “Control your environment,” is frequently the response. Controlling your environment refers to eliminating all the snacks, processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy foods that you have stashed away in your home. The reasoning behind this is that you are given a concrete place to start working and an easy first goal that will provide ongoing benefit throughout the entire weight loss process.
Weight loss is a big goal, and with any big goal that does not have a predetermined path for reaching it can be difficult to begin. There are so many changes that you can make to your life that you may find yourself overwhelmed in trying to find a starting point. Do you go bike riding, run on a treadmill, drink water, or eat a salad? The difficulty in choosing a starting point can cause stress levels to spike and create a mental block that keeps you from accomplishing anything. Taking steps to control your environment by removing unhealthy foods helps to create a setting that will help you along your entire journey, as well as gets you moving and gives you a discrete short term goal that can be achieved relatively quickly.
When you take the steps necessary to create a more weight loss-friendly environment, it mentally reaffirms your willingness to take the steps necessary in order to lose weight. We all make decisions all the time, but there is not always a strong mental commitment behind that decision. Throwing away or donating the unhealthy food in your home to the food bank strengthens that mental commitment because you are actively working toward creating a healthier environment, whether your goal is to lose weight in 2 weeks or lose 100 pounds over the course of several months.
The competition of willpower versus temptation is no longer a factor when you control your environment. Most people who attempt to lose weight have at least a few indulgence foods that they cannot resist. It may be cheesecake, potato chips, cookies, or anything else. As long as you know that they are in the house, you will feel the longing of the temptation to indulge in them. However, when you remove your ability to grab them quickly, it becomes much easier for you to stick to your healthy eating plan.
In many ways, we are all products of our environment. If you live in an environment that is filled with unhealthy foods, processed junk, and sugar, it is only natural that you are likely to be overweight. The decision to lose weight is an easy one, but immediately taking steps toward that goal dramatically increases your chances of overall success. An early goal encourages further effort, getting rid of unhealthy food mentally reaffirms your commitment to change, and the risk of indulgence as a result of temptation is dramatically reduced. There are many weight loss tips that work out there, but this one is the best because it touches all aspects of the weight loss journey and sticks with you the entire time.
