Many women sort through pages upon pages of bad vaginal odor treatment before they find something that works for them.  Oddly enough, many of the most effective treatments aren’t prescription gels or over-the-counter creams.  The treatments that have women coming back again and again to help with an odor problem are often simple home remedies.

Check for health problems first
The cause of vaginal odor is most often simply sweat, urine, or poor hygiene.  Sometimes, however, there are other causes like an infected vagina and irritants.  You should always check for these things first before you try any other kind of vaginal odor treatment.  An unusual increase in discharge usually accompanies both infection and irritation.  See a doctor who can confirm your diagnosis if you think you might have one of these problems.  Treating the infection, or eliminating the irritants, should rid you of your vaginal odor.  If neither of these are your problem, it’s time to move on to the home remedies.

Baby wipes
Baby wipes are a particularly effective vaginal odor treatment for the problems of poor hygiene and lingering urine.  After using the bathroom, try using a baby wipe instead of toilet paper.  The wetness of the wipe is much more effective at removing urine, and will leave a pleasant smell behind.  Since they’re made for babies, you can trust that they won’t irritate the sensitive area.  Baby wipes are a great alternative for people who find regular bath soap too harsh to use around the vagina.  Carry a pack in your purse so you’ll have them with you on the go.

Shaving or trimming
It’s easy for sweat and other bodily fluids to become trapped in pubic hair, leading to a poor odor.  This is more of a problem for people who are very active.  While baby wipes can help with this issue as well, sometimes an easier route is to trim or shave the pubic hair.  This is both a treatment for existing odor and a preventative measure.  You needn’t shave yourself completely bare if you aren’t comfortable with that; simply trimming the hair shorter and keeping it well groomed around the labia in particular should help with odor.  Of course, completely shaving the pubic hair off will help even more, but it isn’t necessary.

Drinking juices
Some women swear by fruit juice as an effective vaginal odor treatment.  Cranberry juice is often used as an antioxidant.  It also counters bacteria found in the urinary tract, so if you have problems with urine causing vaginal odor, this type of juice should help greatly.  It’s good for the health of your body in general too.  Pineapple juice is another favorite.  While this doesn’t contain as many bacteria-fighting components as cranberry juice, it’s been noted to improve the smell and taste of the vagina.  Some men drink pineapple juice for similar reasons, so this is something you and your partner can do together.

You can experiment with your own remedies, too.  Try things like eating more fruit, wearing more breathable panties, or applying a safe cleansing lotion.  Good luck!
