The heart is one of the most abused body part. It has to work 24 hours a day to keep us alive. However, many of us lead unhealthy lifestyles that can the increase the workload of the heart. Diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and other cardiovascular diseases are just some of the examples of the diseases that can damage the heart. Disorder of the heart can be asymptomatic in the early stages and untoward effects can only be noticed in the latter part of the disease process. In order to immediately detect variation in heart functions, routine check which includes heart monitoring test, vital signs taking and laboratory test are done.

Normally, A healthcare provider takes the patient apical pulse through auscultation using a stethoscope and a watch to count the beats. Trained clinicians can actually detect abnormal heart sounds with just using the stethoscope. However, these findings cannot always be reliable so ,oftentimes, technology is used to aid in taking one’s heart rate in the form of heart rate monitors. Earlier released heart rate monitors are primarily used in the hospital setting to monitor heart rates of cardiac patients. The monitor looks is shaped like a  small box and wires are hooked to the patient’s chest in order to detect the apical pulse. New release styles of heart monitor has far different features compared to the older versions. Nowadays, we have wireless heart rate  monitor watch where chest straps is used to detect apical pulse and signals are then sent to the receiver which looks like a wristwatch. Another versions used fabrics sensor placed in a tight shirt or bra to identify the apical pulses.

Nowadays, wrist watches are getting complex with all the features that they contain. Many of these watches have the ability to check an individual’s temperature, respiratory rate, and calories burned and heart rate and quite essential when doing strenuous activities likehome cardio exercise.Nevertheless, they are not reliable source of heart rates because they use the radial pulses rather than apical ones. Moreover, these watches should not be use as replacement for heart rate monitors for cardiac patients. Brands like Nike, Reebok and Timex doesn’t suffice the monitoring features of more sensitive heart monitors.
