The biggest problem that people with high blood pressure would face is the dietary choices that they have to live with. It is not easy to for people to drastically change their food intake. Poor lifestyle habits including poor food intake with empty calories are one of the top three causes of high blood pressure in many adults. With the increasing number of fast food chains being operated and the fast paced lifestyle that people have, it is not a mystery why people have this disease condition. In order to prevent hypertension from progressing, a total change in the dietary intake should be made.

Changing Your Diet – Tips on What to Avoid

The type of food that greatly contributes to the increase in a person’s blood pressure is the fat. The digestion of all food products starts in the mouth but no matter how much chewing a person does, it will not change the chemical composition of fat. When food goes down to the stomach, it is the fats which are the hardest to digest. After digestion, they are stored in the liver for emergency purposes like when the body needs more energy during starvation mode. When excess fat is not stored in the liver, it would then go to the blood circulation and when it gets bored of roaming around, it settles deep into the arteries. Once they accumulate in the arteries, it makes the passageway of the blood narrower thus creating a higher pressure gradient. This gradual accumulation will cause high blood pressure. The foods to avoid that have high fat content would include hamburgers, fried pork fat, fried chicken, cheese, chocolates, potato salad with a lot of mayonnaise, and many others.

Why You Should Also Reduce Your Salt Intake

Another classification of foods which need to be avoided are those with high sodium or salt content. In a normal adult, when the body reaches a point of low blood pressure, the body reacts by releasing several chemicals in the body which are greatly generated in the kidneys in order to compensate. The body reacts by activating the rennin-angiotensin-aldosterone mechanism in order to keep the blood pressure within the normal range. This mechanism greatly depends on sodium and potassium to accumulate in the blood in order to make the volume higher thus causing the normal blood pressure. In a hypertensive adult, this mechanism is still used, however, the body does not need the excess sodium or potassium to make the blood pressure high because the pressure gradient on the blood vessels are high enough to normalize the pressure. The foods to avoid with high sodium content are French fries, junk foods, cheese, pizza, hotdogs, spaghetti, ham, noodles soup, salad dressings, and many more. It is usually recommended that people who have hypertension adhere to a low sodium diet and avoid eating in fast foods and even restaurants.

Controlling and Preventing High Blood Pressure

There are a lot of medications available in the control and prevention of high blood pressure. Even though these medications may be effective in lowering blood pressure, people should not neglect the fact that they have to do their part by adhering to proper food intake with the right type of exercises. With all of the needed actions done in hypertension, people will be able to live a healthy and normal life.
