High Blood Pressure in Young Adults
Majority of the population affected by high blood pressure includes the middle aged to late aged adults. Hypertension beyond age thirty five may not seem unusual, but those people under thirty five experiencing hypertension would generate more investigation. Essential or primary hypertension is still an area of mystery among scientists because this type of hypertension occurs in older adults without cause. When a younger adult experiences hypertension, it is usually associated with causes such as impairment in the functioning of the kidneys, the heart or the endocrine system.
One of the common reasons for high blood pressure in young adults is obesity. Being fat is not the problem with hypertension but it is the food intake that causes the problem. Eating at fast food chains is not a bad thing but consistently eating at these places should not be done because the food being served at these places are very high in fat, sodium, and potassium. This poor dietary choice will eventually lead the young adult to develop atherosclerosis which is a condition of fat deposition and build up in the arteries. What happens in this condition is that the fat that is stored or deposited in the arteries will make the passage of blood more difficult. The narrowing of the passageways will make the pressure exerted on the arteries higher thus causing hypertension. This is a very common type of cause to hypertension to young adults and the worse thing about it is that it may further complicate to other conditions such as cerebrovascular accidents or cardiomyopathy.
Asides from the food intake, high blood pressure in adults also occurs whenever there is an impairment in the kidney functions. Although it has been known that hypertension is the most common cause of kidney failures among older adults, it may also go the other way around in young adults. When the blood pressure is low in a normal adult, it is the kidney which is the primary regulator of blood pressure in the body. When this body organ malfunctions, the body will go haywire and that the blood pressure regulation will not beneficial to the body. There are some kidney diseases that abnormally activate the rennin-angiotensin mechanism even in the presence of normal blood pressure. When this mechanism in the body is activated, it gives way to the vasoconstriction of blood vessels and the increase in the blood volume by the retention of sodium.
Another type of condition which greatly affects the blood pressure is the condition of juvenile diabetes. This disease condition occurs in adults before the age of thirty five. Diabetes is a condition in which the body cannot fully utilize the glucose in the blood for use of cells in their metabolism. Because of this, the body will result to use other sources of energy which can be found in fat. The by product of fat breakdown makes the blood volume thick thus making it hard to circulate. This will eventually cause the person to have high blood pressure.
The causes of high blood pressure in adults are still an area that needs a lot of attention. Whether the cause may be brought about by lifestyle changes or not, people should not neglect the fact that they have to live healthy lives in order to prevent this from happening. A little exercise and some diet modification will go a long way in the prevention of hypertension.
