The whole world has a population estimate of 6,874,700,000 based on the United States Census Bureau. Among the billions of people in that figure, 1 billion adults are overweight and approximately 22 million under five years old are overweight. This is truly a staggering number as many advertisement in television show how many people are hungry and unfed and yet we come up with this number of overweight people that tilts the world in to an imbalance. The number of overweight children are mostly reflected on the way society presents eating habits and how their behavior influences the children.

In simple terms, overweight children are the reflection of how parents are feeding them. There are many ways to know if your child is overweight. The most common way to know is using the Body Mass Index approach. It is computed by dividing the weight in kilograms by the height in meters squared. The results must be based on a corresponding children BMI chart. If the results are above 85 percentile, it suggests overweight and if it is over 95 percentile then it is obesity.

If your child is overweight or obese you should make the first step to help your child lose weight. And that first step is a visit to the pediatrician. The pediatrician will help in the plan for the weight management of your child. Overweight children may be more of a challenge since conventional weight-management strategies have not been fully studied in children.

The common strategies should still apply to children such as limitation of dietary intake to below 1500 kilo calorie per day. Substituting foods like candies and junk foods with lean meats, fruits, vegetables, and grains. Teaching the child about the three basic food groups can actually foster cooperation. With limitation in child intake, the child should also participate in age related games.

The child should be involved in sports at an early age and limit the amount of video games and television. Scheduling your child to sports clinics or swimming lessons can actually help him/her in spending all that stored energy in the body. Not only does it help in losing weight but it also teaches your child to socialize with other children of the same age. Sometimes, being overweight in children affects the psychological aspects of the child. Always be in touch with your child and allow him/her to express feelings of being overweight and how the child is being affected in school. Although the conventional methods of weight loss have produced minimal evidence of good results, your doctor can prescribe you with medication therapy if and only if all the other methods have failed.

Your doctor will prescribe you several medications that might work such as sibutramine and orlistat. It is always safe to remember that when it comes to weight loss, hard work and perseverance is the key. Parents should also not pressure their child into losing weight. Taking things gradually and carefully would produce better results than taking things to hastily.
