Hyperhidrosis Surgery
Are you desperate enough to eliminate hyperhidrosis? You may have tried other treatments like antiperspirants, oral medications, botox injection and iontophoresis but still your life is ruined by it. Those treatments may not have worked well for you. In this case, the last resort is to undergo surgical procedure to effectively get rid of this problem. Hyperhidrosis surgery comes in a number forms. The most effective type of surgery for you will depend on the location and severity of your hyperhidrosis.
Axillary hyperhidrosis is the sweating in armpits. A good surgical treatment for it is the removal or destruction of the sweat gland. There are different methods on how to removing or destructing the sweat gland such as sweat gland suction, retrodermal curettage, and axillary liposuction, Vaser, or Laser Sweat Ablation. Sweat gland suction is adapted from from liposuction. In this method, 30% of the sweat glands are removed which will help reduce production of sweat.
Another main surgical procedure you can opt for is the endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy or ETS. This type of surgery includes cutting, burning, or clamping the the thoracic group of nerve cells forming a nerve center on the main sympathetic chain running alongside the spinal cord. ETS is believed to be a safe and effective procedure. Eighty percent of the patients who have undergone this procedure are reported to have been satisfied with the results and are higher for children. It is effective in treating axillary hyperhidrosis and facial sweating. However, there are cases reported on the bad results involving side effects to the patients who have undergone this surgery for facial sweating treatment. In addition, the original sweating problem may recur after the nerves have regenerated typically within 6 months of the procedure.
If you are experiencing excessive foot sweating, the right type of surgery for you is the lumbar sympathectomy. In this method, the sympathetic chain in the lumbar region is clipped or divided. Ninety percent of the procedures are successful. LTS must only be carried to those patients who have undergone other conservative measures. Certain controversies have arisen on this surgical type. Patients who undergo it usually end up having hypotension. Hypotension is a sign of autonomic dysfunction. Males often end up with retrograde ejaculation. It means that they become infertile and impotent. However, recent studies have shown that these controversial side effects are not validated. In a report released in 2007, there are no such valid cases at all. Apart from the aforementioned surgical methods, percutaneous sympathectomy is also an option. It uses phenol, a carbolic acid, to block certain nerves. Nonetheless, this only allows for temporary relief for hyperhidrosis. Most surgeons recommend this type of procedure before undergoing the permanent sympathectomy.
Surgery is the most extensive and dangerous treatment for hyperhidrosis. It may be associated with side effects. On this note, the best thing you should do is to seek the assistance of experts and have you cases thoroughly studied before deciding on what type of surgery will be most appropriate for your need.
