Hypnotherapy and Weight Loss
Being fat has always been a problem in our society. People struggle to fit in to the description of what society considers as beautiful. You see it on television, hear it on the radio, and read it in magazines that being slim is being beautiful. With all the “mumbo-jumbo” of television and print media, a lot of people are actually being sucked in to this notion. I have a friend that makes a new year’s resolution every year to not get slim because he wishes that the new year will bring the idea that fat is beautiful.
Well guess what, that is not going to happen and my friend is still fat! This idea of getting slim has taken a hold of people and frankly speaking, they are all missing the point. The main point of getting slim is not to look good but to live a healthy life and do activities of daily living without limitation and difficulty. Putting the wrong notion in mind makes a lot of people find the quickest solution in losing weight.
One of the unusual ways of losing weight is by the use of hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is a type of therapy given to clients under hypnosis or sleep. It is known that the last sense to be lost during sleep is the sense of hearing. The hypnotherapist takes advantage of the sense and uses a calm and soothing voice to try to instruct the patient on what to do when he or she wakes up.
This type of therapy is applied to bring about a change in the client’s behavior, emotional content, and attitude. Hypnotherapy has been proven to be effective in treatment of anxiety, insomnia, pain management and also stress management. In the recent years, hypnotherapy has been applied to a number of health conditions which have produced varied results. Using hypnotherapy for weight loss is of no exception. The concept of hypnotherapy to promote weight loss is that , eating is a mental game. Hunger, cravings, and compulsions are all controlled by the brain and physiologic responses to such are only secondary effects of what the brain is trying to do. It is also believed that eating is a source of pleasure and relaxation to individuals and what hypnotherapy does is to substitute the pleasure and relaxation felt with other activities that may be appropriate. This type of therapy also believes that the human brain can reprogram itself with the aid of hypnosis to diminish the feelings of compulsions and avoiding feelings of hunger. The whole concept of hypnotherapy is actually very smart and theoretically effective.
The brain can actually diminish feelings of hunger, cravings, and impulsions as demonstrated in feelings of anxiety and depression. But instructing or totally reprogramming the brain may not be as easy as it sounds since the brain is used to working automatically. Changes may have to occur gradually and not quickly. In the quest for that quick weight loss fix, you may find yourself losing weight in more time than expected. It would probably be best to stick to the conventional diet and exercise instead.
