During our childhood years, we were made to believe that there are a lot of mythical creatures living around us. To mention a few, we have Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Tooth fairy, and of course the less popular sandman. The sandman is a mythical character in western folklore who brings good dreams by sprinkling magic sand unto the eyes of children when they sleep at night.

Waking up in the morning with that “sand” in the eyes are only some of the remaining magic sand that the sand man has left. This technique of using the sandman can actually put children to sleep since they do not like the words bedtime or nap. Going to sleep is a problem that many people have. This type of condition is known as insomnia which specifically means the subjective report of a client from difficulty sleeping. Not only does this entail difficulty sleeping but it also could mean difficulty maintaining sleep or sleeping with poor quality. Poor quality would mean sleeping inadequately and waking up with the feeling of tiredness or fatigue. Sometimes, insomnia can be a condition or a symptom if an impending psychological condition.

People who have insomnia may have a functional impairment when they are awake. Manifestations of this condition would include the feeling of floating when awake, difficulty determining awake or sleeping states, restlessness and irritability, and of course the feeling of being tired at all times. There are three types of insomnia which are classified as transient, acute, and chronic insomnia. Transient insomnia would last less than a week and may be caused by depression or stress. Acute insomnia occurs for less than a month while chronic insomnia occurs more than a month. Diagnosis can be made by asking several questions concerning the quality of sleep, sleep pattern, and efficiency of mental functioning during the day. Treating insomnia should not be the same with all people as several cases may present itself uniquely. Treatments may include pharmacological methods but adverse effects such as dependence to the drug may develop. In some instances, hypnotherapy can be used to treat insomnia through hypnosis.

A hypnotherapist will put the patient into a state of sleep through environmental manipulation or through medication administration. The hypnotherapist then says a couple of words in a calm manner in order to bring about a change in behavior or reduce anxiety. Using hypnosis to reprogram the brain into suppressing disturbing thoughts may be effective in inducing sleep since insomnia is almost purely caused by psychological reasons. This may be a therapy for those who do not want to resort to medical regimen but this does not guarantee immediate results. It is better to have a combination of treatment modalities in order to maximize the results of hypnosis. Taking sleep inducing medications while undergoing hypnotherapy may be more effective than each of them done individually. This would ensure faster results and less adverse effects. With time and patience, insomnia may be treated. Otherwise, you could always have the sandman to pay you a visit.
