It is often said that one the most expensive stones in the world are diamonds. The experience I have had last month while staying with my uncle in the hospital totally change the way I see and value diamonds. About a month ago, my uncle was diagnosed to have kidney stones.

The doctor said that with the right dietary and lifestyle change, operation will not be needed since the stones could just pass. My uncle, being the carefree and spontaneous guy that he is, went on to live his life of being sedentary and eating just about anything that he can have his hands on. After the initial check up that he had, he was then rushed back to the hospital for severe back pain and difficulty urinating for the past days. He was scheduled to undergo surgery to remove the stones he had in his kidneys.

The operation was successful and my uncle recovered well from the surgery and was for discharge. That whole week while I was staying with him made me realize that the amount that he spent for the whole duration of the stay in the hospital would be enough to buy myself a diamond ring. That’ s a lot of money for some stone that needs to be thrown away. To prevent this thing from ever happening, my uncle was given home treatments in order for the stones not to recur.

Home treatments for kidney stones entails a lot of discipline and determination in order to prevent the recurrence. Some controversy exists over dietary restrictions because of the uncertain effectiveness and the problem clients experience in following the regimen. In the past, calcium stones and hypercalciurea may be controlled by limiting excessive intake to 800mg daily. However, more recent research have supported increasing the diet with calcium rich foods. Consulting your doctor concerning this recent research would eliminate confusion. One of the many foods to avoid to prevent stones are tea, tomatoes, asparagus, instant coffee, cola drinks, beer, rhubarb, green beans, spinach cabbage, celery, chocolate and many more depending on the type of stones they have developed in the past. Asides from diet, exercise should also be encourage to foster good digestion and the utilization of the food intake into natural energy and not toxic waste.

Administration of medications should also be observed in home treatments. Still depending on the stones formed, different types of medication apply to different patients. For hypercalciuric patients, a thiazide diuretic may be taken in order to reabsorb the calcium and not excreted in the urine. Calcium oxalate stones may be treated with vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), magnesium oxide, or cholestyramine. Uric acid stones may be cured with allopurinol because these drugs lower the blood’s uric content. These are only few of the medications being prescribed to patients with kidney stones. These home treatments may be complicated at times because of the specific and detailed instructions but preventing the disease from occurring in the first place is still the best option than treatment.
