Meditation Is Great For Your Health
There used to be a lot of mystery surrounding meditation and rumors about the effects of a daily meditation practice, but those days are over now that our scientists have been studying the effects for about 50 years. We now know that meditation is great for your health and that there are no negative side effects. So it has been added to the category of natural health strategies like regular exercise and healthy eating.
The main reason meditation is so good for you is because it provides an opportunity to relax deeply every day. Real relaxation is not common in our fast paced society where being bombarded with visual and or audio stimuli is regarded as relaxation. To sit down in your meditation chair and do nothing but meditate for a few minutes affects your entire day and you will clearly be able to tell the difference from sitting in front of the TV.
Meditation has a positive effect on our physical well being and it has been shown to lower blood pressure, increase our ability to use the oxygen in the air, make our breathing more effective and lower our need for sleep. Some of the mental effects are increased ability to handle stressful situations and negative emotion, increased concentration and creativity. And that’s just to mention a few.
Some people find it really hard to meditate and are either unable to sit still or fall asleep, when they try. Being restless shouldn’t keep you from meditation and enjoying the benefits, so if that’s the case for you then you should try walking meditation that has many of the same benefits and is a lot easier to perform for the active mentality.
Today is a great day to get started if you don’t have a meditation practice already. It doesn’t matter much what kind of meditation you do in the beginning, just that you do it. Later you will have plenty of opportunities to try new things and find just the right kind for you.
