Migraine Treatment For Children
The only thing worse than suffering a migraine headache is having to watch your child experience this crippling pain. It is bad enough when you yourself must learn to cope with migraines. However, it can be heartbreaking to watch your child experience this pain and not be able to do anything about it. Children look to their parents for protection and guidance. This can often be difficult to provide for a child who suffers from migraines.
However, migraine treatment for children is very similar to the treatment for adults. Many parents do not want their children to suffer from the many side effects caused by migraine medications. Also, many parents are fearful of any harm these drugs may due to their delicate systems. If this is the case, then following some natural migraine treatments should help ease the pain and get them back to their normal life as soon as possible.
At the first sign of the onset of a migraine you should have a designated place for the child to go where they can lie down and try to relax. This should be a nice dark room which is very comfortable. Cold or warm packs, which ever feels better to them, may be applied to their forehead or face to help ease the pain. It may be difficult, however, the household should be kept as quiet as possible to help the child relax. It may be against your nature; however, you should try to leave the child alone as much as possible. As parents, we want to tend to our child’s needs when they do not feel good. However, a child suffering from a migraine should be left alone to relax and not be constantly reminded of the pain.
The anxiety suffered at the onset of a migraine in a child may increase the pain and longevity of a migraine attack. For this reason, it is imperative that the child learns some breathing techniques which would help keep them calm and relaxed in the event of attack.
Finally, you should always keep a migraine journal for your child. This journal should be very detailed and list any foods which the child has eaten or drank and what activity was occurring when the migraine started to set in. This can be helpful in identifying what is causing the migraines to occur and how to best avoid them in the future. Record the entries in the journal right away while the memories are fresh. Trying to go back later to piece everything together may cause you to miss important events which may have a factor in your child’s migraine.
