The saying “Forewarned is forearmed” is apt for people suffering from high blood pressure or hypertension as it’s medically known. This killer is known for its “silent” stalking of victims who live on unaware of the issue their body’s struggling with. Often, it’s too late by the time they find out.

Well, the scenario needn’t be as grim as that if you only take the time to find out more about this dreaded disease. Knowing whether or not you suffer from it is the first step. The next is finding out as much as you can about it and the third step involves learning about the various natural cures for high blood pressure that are primarily because they come free of side-effects.

Finding out if you have high blood pressure is just a matter of keeping a watch on your BP reading. If it’s always at 140/90 or above then you have cause to worry. A normal reading would be 120/85. Higher pressure results in more stress on the heart as well as greater pressure on the arterial walls. This eventually leads to heart disease, kidney issues as well as the hardening of arteries known medically as atherosclerosis.

There are a whole bunch of factors that are responsible for this condition. The main reasons for hypertension include: being overweight, living a sedentary life, smoking, drinking, consuming excess sodium, consuming less potassium, age, stress and genetics.

Today, more emphasis is being laid on discovering natural cures for high blood pressure. Fortunately, this has resulted in the identification of many natural remedies. Some natural remedies that you can rely on include Coenzyme Q10, hawthorn, fish oil, garlic and folic acid.

  • Coenzyme Q-10: Supplements rich in this enzyme have been proved in various studies to be effective in regulating high blood pressure. It does so by dilating the walls of the blood vessels thereby, reducing the pressure. CoQ10 is also known for its ability to provide energy to the heart muscles aiding in the pumping of blood. This enzyme is one that’s found in each cell of our bodies and it’s when their levels drop that we begin to start experience cardio problems.
  • Hawthorn: Clinical studies have also backed the usage of this herb to combat the effects of hypertension. A study conducted in UK showed patients consuming hawthorn over a period of 16 weeks, show a remarkable drop in their blood pressure readings.
  • Fish oil: This ingredient contains both docohexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). It’s the former which is thought to be the component with the ability to reduce blood pressure.
  • Garlic: This household herb has shown positive effects on both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. It’s recommended that individuals consume it either in fresh form or as a supplement but always under the supervision of a medical practitioner. This is to avoid unwanted interaction of garlic with other prescription drugs.
  • Folic Acid: Supplement of Folic acid have also been proved to qualify as natural cures for high blood pressure.
