Teeth, being the delicate things that they are, are easily broken or dislodged, and whether it’s because of an accident or through illness it’s not uncommon for people to lose them altogether. It can be a knock to the confidence to have a tooth missing, especially if it’s one that’s in a prominent position in the mouth and the gap is always visible when you talk – fortunately, dentists are experts at giving us back a great looking smile, and they can do this through the use of permanent dentures.

Everyone is familiar with regular dentures – the kind our grandparents used to wear, and the kind the can be taken out of the mouth at any time. Over the years these have been a great way to help people who have missing teeth, and have provided a relatively cheap and easy way of giving them back a full set. There are many drawbacks with these kinds of dentures, though, as they can often be uncomfortable to wear and can come loose at the wrong moment – denture wearers often have to be careful about what they eat, as it can be embarrassing for a denture to come out in the middle of a busy restaurant. A much better solution, these days, is to ask your dentist to fit permanent dentures.

Permanent dentures are, as the name suggests, a permanent solution to missing teeth. Once they are inserted into the mouth by a dentist they remain there for good. The dentist will drill a small hole into the jawbone and fix a metal pin into place that will act as the root of the tooth, and a prosthetic tooth is then made and securely fixed to the pin. The false tooth will be made in a colour that will help it blend in with the rest of the patient’s teeth, and once the procedure is complete it shouldn’t be possible to tell which one is the implant. After a week or so, once the effects and discomfort of the procedure has worn off, the tooth should become natural feeling to the patient and so much so that it isn’t uncommon, over time, for them to forget themselves which tooth isn’t real.

This procedure can also be used in a process called cosmetic dentistry, and this is when a patient chooses to have one of their teeth replaced with a cosmetic implant. Usually, these are either a tooth made of gold or another metal, or one that’s embedded with a jewelled stone. This adds yet another option to the list of cosmetic surgery procedures that people can choose to enhance their bodies.

Permanent dentures are ideal for anyone who’s looking to regain their full set of teeth, but who don’t want the inconvenience of a removable denture – they aren’t cheap, and although the costs do vary from dentist to dentist, they usually will set the patient back by about $2000. Cosmetic implants are usually considerably more expensive, and the cost depends entirely on the choice of implant chosen.
