woman-smilingTo elaborate, menopause indicates a permanent discontinuation of female fertility and is a natural midlife process. To shorten, it is a full year without any sign of menstrual blood.

Reproductive fertility ends with menopause. Formerly, the term was meant only towards women but now, there exists called the male menopause. We’ll come to that later. However, both are a part of a normal biological process occurring between the mid-forties and early fifties.

The lowered levels of estrogen and progesterone mark the transition to menopause in women. Estrogen, a vital factor in the development of the breasts and uterus also controls the ovulation cycle (eggs released by the ovary into the fallopian tubes), a lack of which proves detrimental to both the physical and the emotional health. Menstruation stops due to lack of progesterone since it can’t line the uterus walls and prepare it for the fertilized egg.

The end of menstruation is manifested different ways and they also vary from women to women. A few symptoms, however; stay common but a large number of women missed out on them, too. They are the lucky ones; else, menopause takes its tolls on the lives as well as on the interpersonal relationships of women.

The onset of menopause is marked by irregular periods, increased or decreased in flow, occurring frequently or at longer gaps. This fluctuates ovulation, which can be considered the positive side of menopause. This is a time when pregnancy is less likely; though to be on a safer side, it’s wise to use contraception unless periods are missed for a whole year.

Since the genital orifices also dry up by this time and lose elasticity, artificial lubrication is absolutely necessary to stop the burning and itching sensations. Certain instances of delusional parasitosis (a form of psychosis giving rise to strong delusional belief of bodily parasitic infestations; the worst cases leading to self-destructive behaviors through self-mutilations) have been recorded by and around this phase, so the precaution is a must. Even if it doesn’t go that extent, increased chances of urinogenital infections stay present.

Minor incontinences become frequent during a menopause; it’s different from the frequent urges to urinate. These menopause symptoms often occur when laughing or sneezing or even coughing and may continue even after the menopause days get over. However, the most common among the symptoms of menopause stay the hot flash. It’s the dropping estrogen levels to blame; they cause sudden vasodilations causing sudden rise in the skin’s temperature. Visible indications include sweating and a reddened appearance for as little as 30 seconds to several minutes and over a certain span. This is different from the night sweats, though related; night sweats cause severe disruptions to the sleep cycle.

Still, the above are lesser nightmares if compared to the most dreaded weight gain. The onset gifts around five pounds around the pelvic (waist and abdomen) region, along with coarse, thinning hair and wrinkles to go with the adult acne and hair on the chin and the upper lip. That sure makes up for a different appearance.
