Does Apple Cider Vinegar Have Any Health Benefits?
Remember that old adage about eating an apple a day? Well, to really keep the doctor away, make it apple cider vinegar. This humble liquid is a healing powerhouse that can treat a plethora of ailments inside and out.
Forget milk. Apple cider vinegar really does a body good. Going back thousands of years, it is a time-honored fixture in near countless remedies as well as simply a wonder tonic taken daily to promote overall good health. In 400 B.C. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, treated his patients with ACV, but the ancient Babylonians were using vinegar in 5,000 B.C.
The fermentation process produces a host of healthful enzymes, minerals, essential amino acids, antioxidants and other nutrients, 90 substances in all, that give apple cider vinegar (or just ACV) its antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and antiviral qualities.
Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits
On the inside, ACV benefits could fill a book – and in fact, many have been penned on the subject. But to name just a few, apple cider vinegar can aid diabetics by helping balance blood sugars, it detoxifies the body and cleanses the blood. It clears out excess calcium in joints and blood vessels meanwhile fortifying teeth and bones, aiding in arthritis, high blood pressure, kidney stones, bursitis and heart disease. It balances the body’s pH level, boosts the immune system, reduces high cholesterol, improves digestion, relieves sinus issues, headaches and earaches. It’s effective in treating heartburn and acid reflux, combats fatigue, enhances weight loss programs and more.
On the outside, apple cider vinegar helps beautify skin and hair, get rid of pimples, combat cold sores and shingles, ease eczema, fight fungus, soothe minor burns, insect bites, itchiness, relieve sore muscles and backaches, treat calluses and corns, help stop hair loss and give embarrassing dandruff the brush off.
The Right ACV
But not every bottle of apple cider vinegar contains all this power. The kind found in most supermarkets is the distilled, sparkling clear kind, which is fine for cleaning windows or any of the countless household uses for vinegar in general. But the kind that’ll clean your insides and leave you gleaming with good health can only be the organic, raw, unpasteurized variety. More supermarkets now have a small bottle of the good stuff tucked away on a bottom shelf, sort of hidden away because it’s not exactly pretty. The best ACV is cloudy with cobweb-like things floating around, which is actually what is called “the mother.” This is what you want to get.
Using Apple Cider Vinegar
To maintain good health, drink a tablespoon of ACV (be sure to shake the bottle first to get some of the good stuff that may have settled at the bottom) in a glass of water first thing in the morning. Home remedies for specific ailments vary from a teaspoon of ACV in water two, three or even six times a day, to a tablespoon with water once or more times a day.
