The Benefits of Starflower Oil

The borage or famously known as starflower is given its name due to its perfect five narrow pointed petals that definitely resembles the appearance of a star. Typically, they are light blue in color and they even bloom at the same time. They usually bloom during milder climates in specific regions throughout the year.

Starflower oil is collected from its seeds and these seeds contain a fatty acid known as gamma linolenic acid or GLA. This important fatty acid functions by being converted into a hormone known as prostaglandin E1 (PGE1). PGE1 has numerous benefits that can provide to the body. These benefits include anti-inflammatory properties that are useful for blood thinning and dilation.

Ever since the Roman era, starflower oil has already been utilized due to its medicinal capabilities. In fact, a lot of authors even write about it wherein they describe it as an enigmatic type of plant that possesses healing abilities most especially the stems, leaves and of course, the seeds. Nowadays, starflower plant is primarily cultivated for commercial reasons. But its numerous benefits are still present and have been used by a lot of people. Here are some of the benefits that starflower oil can give:

1.) Anti-inflammatory properties

Recent studies have concluded that starflower oil can give benefits in relieving pulmonary inflammation, hence, improving one’s respiratory system. Other skin conditions can also be relieved such as skin inflammation, skin dryness, eczema and cutaneous inflammatory skin diseases. Moreover, an application of starflower oil can also relieve itchiness as well as skin lesions that are present on infants.

2.) Improve blood circulation

By maintaining a regular blood circulation, starflower oil can prevent the formation of blood clots. Compared to those diets wherein the consumption of saturated fats can’t be avoided, starflower oil is much better when it comes to reducing the risks of increased blood pressure. Since starflower oil contains GLA, it maintains blood serums to their normal levels, thus, the chances of developing cardiovascular diseases and high cholesterol conditions are dwindled. Since starflower oil can hinder clot formation, atherosclerotic plaques are prevented as well and heart diseases are least likely to happen.

3.) Prevent cancer and nerve damage

A lot of researchers have also confirmed the capabilities of starflower oil to lower the chances of developing certain kinds of cancer in an individual most especially prostate cancer. According to their research, starflower oil suppresses tumor growth which is the starting point of cancer. Moreover, starflower oil is also useful in the transmission of nerve impulses and can lower the chances of having nerve damages.

4.) Promotes skin care and relieves problems experienced by women

Starflower oil is known to promulgate skin care. When in the form of supplements, it can decrease the signs of skin aging. Furthermore, it can also prevent skin dryness and can even treat psoriasis.

Premenstrual symptoms are major problems among women. Luckily, starflower oil can also take part in relieving these symptoms. Additionally, it has also been known to treat cramping during ovulation periods, mood swings, breast tenderness and other problems related to menopause.

Although starflower oil has been known to provide a lot of benefits to a person, it is strongly discouraged to overuse them since it can lead to numerous adverse reactions. These side effects can be nausea and vomiting, liver problems, diarrhea, indigestion and severe headache.
