Most people recognize that b vitamins are very important to your health.  You may not be aware of just how common is is for people to have b vitamin levels that are low enough to cause serious health issues.

Vegetarians, vegans, smokers, drinkers and people that are over the age of 65 have long been recognized as having an increased propensity of having low levels of vitamin b.  It used to be that professionals believed that if you were not in one of these groups you did not need to be concerned with your vitamin b levels.  Integrative healthcare professionals now believe that this is not true.  Recent evidence suggests that just having slightly low vitamin b levels places you is serious health jeopardy.    Experts believe that thanks to consuming too much processed food, up to 60% of all people in the United States have low levels of Vitamin B.

Other than the high risk groups previously mentioned, there are other groups we now know are at greater risk of developing a vitamin b deficiency.  Your risk goes up if you eat poorly or have a high-stress life.

Many experts now advocate taking supplemental vitamin b, even in the absence of vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms.  Burt Berkson, MD believes that most Americans should take at least three time the recommended RDA of vitamin B.

Because even moderately low levels of b vitamins can trigger cardiovascular disease, cancer and depression, most experts believe that it is not enough.  Only two years ago many experts would have agreed that having a blood level of vitamin B12 of 200 was satisfactory.  We now know that people are at risk of developing neurological issues when they have B12 levels between 200 and 400.

If you are not already experiencing low vitamin b levels, oral supplementation is still a good idea.  For those with low levels, b12 shots are the best course of action.
