A significant number of people suffer from thyroid problems. One of the most common thyroid disorders is hypothyroidism, a condition that results from decreased levels of thyroid hormones in the body. Thyroid is an endocrine gland situated in front of the neck and just below the so-called ‘voice box’ or larynx. It is responsible for synthesis and storage of hormones, which play a vital role in body’s metabolism. Manifestations of the condition are mainly associated with  impaired metabolism. Those with hypothyroidism commonly experience generalized weakness, muscle spasms, constipation, and cold intolerance. Brain functioning is also affected as the disorder leads to depression, irritability, and altered memory. One fact about this condition that probably poses the biggest concern is that despite the loss of appetite, patients with the disorder continuously gain weight and they seem to find it difficult to control it. Together with proper medication, prompt treatment, and surgical intervention, thyroid supplements are of big help in effective management of the endocrine problem.

Thyroid supplements can either be synthetic or natural. Synthetic supplements, such as Levothyroxine, contain hormones that mimic the action of the natural thyroid hormones in the body. Meanwhile, natural supplements contain compounds that aid in proper functioning of the gland. These chemical compounds are as follows:

Iodine, the basic component in thyroid hormone synthesis, greatly helps in addressing the problem regarding the low circulating amount of thyroid hormones in the system. Iodine must be consumed at a right dose because excess amount can interfere with the normal activity of the gland. Doctors recommend intake of  600 mcg of Iodine per day. Sea foods and sea weeds are excellent sources of this essential element.

Selenium and Zinc are both considered as natural thyroid supplements. These minerals promote the production and release of thyroid hormones from the gland. List of food sources that are high in these compounds are sea foods, grains, wheat, and organ meats such as liver.

Certain vitamins should also included in the diet plan for the condition. Vitamin A, commonly found in both green and orange fruits and vegetables, is effective in maintenance of normal size and  regulation of activities of the gland. Vitamin C also aids in normal mechanisms of the thyroid. Moreover, it has antioxidant properties that boost the body’s immune system. Citrus fruits and certain vegetables such as Broccoli and Cabbage are known sources of this essential vitamin. Vitamin D indirectly affects the functioning of the gland. It stimulates the pituitary gland in the brain to secrete a hormone that prompts the thyroid gland to release its hormones. Apart from foods such as eggs, liver, and fortified milk, sunshine is also a great source of this compound. Vitamin E in green leafy vegetables, oil, and margarine also has a part in production of the thyroid hormone.

Lastly, essential amino acids must be part of the treatment as well for these are the building blocks of proteins. The thyroid gland is mainly composed of protein. Moreover, this component helps in weight control. Best sources of protein are meat, legumes, and dairy products.
