Treating Nail Fungus Is A Marathon, Not A Sprint
If you’re suffering from a nail fungus infection, you’ve got to get your head around two basic facts. First topical treatments will only work if they come into contact with the fungus in your nail, and second, treatment times a long and many people don’t manage to stick to a regular treatment schedule without interruption.
As a nail fungus infection progresses, the fungus becomes more and more deeply embedded within the nail. So for your treatment to be effective, you have to ‘debride’ (scrape away) the surface layers of the nail above the infected area, before each treatment application. That way the antifungal medication has more chance of penetrating into the nail to reach the fungus and kill it.
Once you’ve applied the nail treatment, make sure you don’t rub it off by mistake. Allow it to dry out completely before putting on socks and shoes. Same with fungus finger nails, let them dry before using your hands or wearing drugs. It may be tempting to cover up those yellow nails, but never use artificial nails during treatment, as the covering traps moisture within the nail encouraging fungal growth.
Don’t be discouraged if after several weeks of treatment you can’t see any visible improvement. In fact it will take up to 12 months for a toe nail infection to be completely cured. This is because you can only consider yourself completely free of infection once a new healthy nail has grown out.
Many sufferers have had success with establishing a tracking system for their toenail fungus treatment. The simplest method is to draw a nail shape at the beginning of your treatment regime outlining the extent and position of the infection. Do this again every month. Although you wont normally see improvements over the short term (nails grow slowly) once the months pass you should see positive changes.
Another good idea is to set a specific time each day, week or twice a week (depending on the requirements of your specific treatment) to apply the therapy. Routines are habit forming and should help you be consistent over time.
