Perimenopause, often referred to as premenopause, can begin a decade or more before actual menopause starts. While some women experience severe perimenopausal symptoms and some experience none at all, the severity of perimenopause symptoms varies from individual to individual.

Spontaneous perspiration is one of the most common symptoms of perimenopause. When this occurs in the daytime, it is known as hot flashes. Hot flashes often occur suddenly, regardless of the temperature. This perspiration is generally quite uncomfortable, and can be embarrassing as it can be noticeable to others. In addition to hot flashes, many women also experience night sweats. When night sweating is excessive, it can lead to exhaustion and other health issues due to the frequent disruption of sleep. Your nightclothes and blankets may become wet, and disturb your partner’s sleep as well.

Some women experience mood swings during perimenopause. This also is due to the fluctuation of one’s hormones. Depression, anxiety, and irritability can occur frequently, even if they were not present before.

Changes in your normal menstrual patterns can start during perimenopause. You may begin to notice lighter menstrual periods, heavier periods, or irregularities in your cycle. You might skip a period, or have periods of longer or shorter duration than you are accustomed to having prior to perimenopause.

If you have noticed any of these changes, there are two essential points to keep in mind. First, the hormonal changes which cause these symptoms are completely natural and normal. In other words, your body is doing what it is supposed to do at this stage in your life. Second, it is also important to know it is not necessary for you to suffer. If any of these symptoms are affecting your everyday routine, or having a negative impact on your life, help is not far away. A visit to your physician is the first step in getting the help you need to relieve your symptoms. This stage of life can be healthy, and you can be strong and happy, without your life being disrupted by perimenopause symptoms.
