Do you know that exposing yourself to sunlight in just ten minutes can already greatly assist the production of vitamin D in your body? Furthermore, this short amount of time can already be a big contributor of preventing vitamin D deficiencies. However, sunlight is not enough if you want to have sufficient level of vitamin D. You also have to consume foods like eggs, fish, cod liver oil and most especially fortified milk. But what does vitamin D do? Actually, it is responsible for the growth and development of the person’s bones and even the teeth.

Individuals most especially the children are susceptible to bone deformities once they do not meet the requirements of vitamin D. Rickets is probably one of the common upshots that can be experienced if a child does not have sufficient level of this vitamin. Adults will be acquiring the infamous osteoporosis as they get older.

The Main Functions of Vitamin D

But what does vitamin D do to maintain the healthiness of the body? With enough vitamin D, the serum phosphorus and calcium level of the body is maintained on their normal level, making the body able to absorb regular amounts of these important minerals. When this process is maintained, the person will have strong and healthy bones even after he or she reaches the age of 50. Furthermore, sufficient amounts of vitamin D can also prevent various diseases like hypertension, osteoporosis, specific types of cancer and some autoimmune diseases.

Cell differentiation is another important function that can only be maintained once the body has enough level of vitamin D. Through this process, the body produces cells that are specialized for various purposes. As this process is underway, the cells will also replicate which is another important process towards growth and wound healing.

Nonetheless, there are instances when cell proliferation also includes the replication of cancer cells. To combat this problem, vitamin D assists the prevention of this abnormal process that is taking place in the body. Furthermore, it also creates an environment that can stimulate the process of cell differentiation.

Latest Theories from Research and Studies

A recent study has also been conducted wherein it was discovered that vitamin D can also boost the body’s immune system. And as mentioned earlier, enough amounts of vitamin D can prevent the development of autoimmune diseases.

Some studies have also hypothesized that vitamin D can maintain the person’s blood pressure to its normal level, hence, reducing the risk of hypertension. Nevertheless, this theory has not been fully concluded yet.

Verified Results from Experts

But what experts have fully verified is that vitamin D has an important role in treating several diseases such as specific types of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and even Alzheimer’s disease.

What vitamin D does to the body is highly beneficial. However, it is important for everyone to be mindful that this vitamin should not be absorbed in excessive amounts since this can already be detrimental to one’s health. This statement is usually addressed to those individuals taking vitamin D supplements. Regardless, overdose of vitamin D is least likely to occur if the person is acquiring it using the natural sources which are the sunlight as well as foods rich in this vitamin.
