Large breasts may seem like a treat to some women and definitely to most men, but carrying around oversized breasts causes many health concerns. Breast reduction surgery is a type of plastic surgery that is not entirely cosmetic. Breast reduction surgery actually provides health benefits by reducing the strain placed on the back, chest, heart and body by carrying heavier and larger breasts. In some instances, health insurance companies will even cover portions of medical bills associated with breast reduction surgeries.

Women with oversized breasts choose to have breast reduction surgery to prevent health problems or remedy pre-existing problems caused by carrying large breasts. Health concerns that may institute a need for breast reduction surgery include self-consciousness issues, back pain problems, heart problems and breathing problems. Large breasts that disrupt the woman’s sleeping or interfere with her daily activities also cause a need or provide a reason to choose breast reduction surgery.

Some men may also have breast reduction surgery for the same reasons or even to remedy a condition known as gynecomastia. Gynecomastia affects half of the men in the world today and occurs when men have an enlarged breast or breasts caused by health conditions as well as drugs and legal medications like anti-depressants, marijuana or steroid use.

Unfortunately, like all surgeries, breast reduction surgery has a few side effects that patients should consider before going under the knife. When you choose to have breast reduction surgery, remember that you may have to live with a few temporary or permanent side effects. These side effects include stitches, temporary wounds, scarring, loss of nipple and breast sensitivity to touch, the inability to breast feed and possible asymmetry between the breasts.

The cost to have breast reduction surgery varies according to many factors. If you have the surgery for a medical reason, instead of a vain and cosmetic reason, your health insurance many cover all or part of the medical bills related to the surgery. Without health insurance or a medical reason for the surgery, breast reduction may cost anywhere between $6500 and $10500 per breast. This value changes according to such factors as how much breast tissue you wish to remove, the surgeon you choose, the region in which you live and any special accommodations you may require for your health issues.

Breast reduction recovery
requires several weeks, but health benefits from the surgery may start to appear immediately after the surgery is complete.
